Aznauryan Igor Erikovich, Pediatric Ophthalmologist

Cheif Executive of the Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology Clinics “Yasniy Vzor”, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical and Technical Sciences, Member of the European Pediatric Ophthalmological Association, Member of the European Strabismological Association, Sviatoslav Fedorov Award Winner.

Dr Aznauryan is the author of more than 40 research works, 11 inventions and innovative proposals in the field of pediatric ophthalmology.

He has developed and integrated into clinical practice new, highly efficient methods, that share no analogs in the world:

  • Treatment of the refractive amblyopia in children with astigmatism,
  • Unique methods of surgical treatment of the concomitant strabismus with small and variable angles,
  • Integrated therapeutic approach to the treatment of children with nystagmus.

Igor Aznauryan was born on April 24th, 1964 in Tbilisi, in the family of office workers.

In 1981 he started his education at the Yerevan State Medical Institute and graduated in 1987.

From 1987 to 1988 he did his internship specializing in Eye Diseases.

In December, 1988 he was offered a postgraduate course at the Pediatric Vision Care Department of the Helmholtz Moscow Research Institute of Eye Diseases.

Since 1988 he was a researcher in the Pediatric Vision Care Laboratory of the Research Center of the Yerevan Medical Institute.

From 1988 to 1992 he was a postgraduate student of the Pediatric Vision Care Department at the Helmholtz Institute of Eye Diseases.

In 1993 he defended his PhD Thesis on “Therapeutic Approach and Treatment Mode of the Concomitant Convergent Partially Accommodative Strabismus in Children” at the Helmholtz Research Institute of Eye Diseases. The thesis was written under the supervision of the honored scientist of the Russian Federation, founder of the Pediatric Ophthalmology School in Russia and the Soviet Union, Professor Avetisov Eduard Sergeievich.

In 1996 he organized a Pediatric Vision Care Department at the Inter-sectorial Research and Technology Complex (MNTK) “Eye Microsurgery” named after Sviatoslav Fedorov, and was at its head till September, 2001.

In June, 2001 he established a Pediatric Ophthalmology Clinic “Yasniy Vzor” – the first non-governmental pediatric ophthalmologicy clinic, unique in its capabilities.

Since 2003 he is a full member (academician) of the Russian Academy of Medical and Technical Sciences.

In June, 2005 he became a Sviatoslav Fedorov Prize Winner in the “Health for Children” category and was awarded a commemorative medal “For Noble Thoughts and Worthy Deeds”.

In February, 2006 he was awarded a Chizhevskii Prize for outstanding achievements in scientific and public activities.

In 2007 he was awarded the highest Russian public award – “Russia's Pride” for his personal contribution to the development of national ophthalmology and great practical work on vision recovery in children and adolescents as well as for charity.

In April, 2009 he defended his thesis on “The System of Visual Function Recovery in Refractive and Strabismic Amblyopia in Children and Adolescents” and was given an academic degree of the Doctor of Medical Sciences.
